First Deer Harvest for Chris Cox!
My first deer hunt was in early black powder October 2006. It was opening day. My dad and I were really
excited because this was my first opportunity to go deer hunting. The conditions weren't right for a morning
hunt so we went hunting in the afternoon. It was a great afternoon for hunting. We were hunting in a
homemade blind. My brother, my dad and I made the blind in the summer so it could be put up before
hunting season. We made the pieces in about a week at home, then we assembled them at the farm. It
stands about six feet off the ground on a metal frame. It is really comfortable to hunt in. It has carpeting, a
little propane heater and if you're quiet you can move around in it. I sit in it and read a book.

The day we went hunting my dad and I got to the farm around two o' clock. We got our gear on and got out
our guns, we waited to load them until we got to the blind. We were hunting with T/C encore blackpowders. I
was using dads and my dad was using his second one that my brother uses when he hunts. We crept
across the field and got into the blind. Around sunset two small deer came out. I waited until it was broad
side so I could take a good clean shot. It was about a seventy yard shot. After the smoke cleared I watched
the deer run into woods. At that point I looked over at my dad and his big proud smile and he said, "You got
'em buddy". Then I noticed my dad was just as excited as I was as if it was his first deer. It is a time that I will
always remember and my dad says he will never forget. Since that day I have harvested three additional
deer and each time my dad has had that same proud smile. Also I've developed a love for this sport like my
brother and dad. At this point I look forward to scouting for the seasons to come, and spending more time
with my brother and dad.

them both and thanks to the New QDMA Co-op that produced these beautiful bucks!

12 Year Old Morgan Rhodes harvested this 136-5/8" buck, first with her bow at the new QA Cty Co-op. Congrats Morgan, Great Job! Bases were 6-3/8 diameter,
23-4/8" long beams, Right beam 9" was broken at the g3 from fighting, brow tine on left points toward the back and sticks him the neck. Another 1-3/4" point
sticks off the base of the rack and points back also.
We completely skinned Morgans deer to see what the health problem was. This buck was fighting so much that he had a broken rib, holes in the neck, side,
and rear from antlers, and blind in right eye. When the taxidermist skinned the head he said the whole right side of his head was full of puss and torn with small
holes in the hide. I think we have the sex ratio close after harvesting as many does as we can every year for five years to show this kind of aggression in our
bucks. Maybe rattling, scents and calling will finaly work. This is what we have been working for! CHESTER RIVER QDMA CO-OP

Attached are photos of my daughter's (Madison, age 12) first deer taken last year on a friends farm (Blue Heron
Reach Farm) in Cecil County. The hunting rules on the farm require any buck taken must have antlers that extends
out beyond the ears. Madison's six pointer was shot with a 20 gauge H&R, had an inside spread of 19.50",
and field dressed at 190lbs.

Two brothers were given the opportunity to harvest their first deer at
Ft. Frederick's Antlerless Managed Hunt. Jared and Jacob Vonella,
Jared 13, harvested a 11-1/2 year old doe that dressed 90 lbs and
Jacob 14, harvested a 10-1/2 year old doe that dressed 95 lbs. Their
Dad was very proud of them and they had an exciting time in the
woods. Congrats guys!
